The only commune in France to boast more than 30 peaks over 3,000 m, Saint-Paul-sur-Ubaye is also one of the largest and most sparsely populated, covering an area of 22,000 ha.

Bordering Italy, it is crossed by the Via Alpina (Trieste-Monaco), the Route des Grandes Alpes, between the Vars and Cayolle passes, and the GR 5 and GR 6 footpaths.
