The early stages of the city of Lappeenranta are located on the western slopes of the current Fortress, where permanent settlement began in the 16th century. Later, this peninsula projecting into Lake Saimaa was marked by Russian military fortification work and garrison times. The nature and cultural trail of the Fortress introduces the area's old buildings, cultural history, and plants, many of which have come to the area with people - either brought from far away Russia with horses and soldiers or introduced and cultivated as medicine, food, or for other beneficial uses. The path passes at times on steep slopes and small paths along the ramparts, from which there are magnificent distant views of Lake Saimaa and the city bay. Along the route, there are 11 information boards and lime tree-shaped path signs. The route is not maintained and is not barrier-free, but the information boards have been placed so that access to them is as barrier-free as possible. The route can be walked in any direction, and the boards can also be read individually.

One of the most mysterious species of the Fortress is the hairy, broad-leaved, sturdy, and pale yellow-flowered 'hullukaali' (Lithospermum officinale), whose medicinal effects were already known to the ancient Egyptians and Babylonians.
