The Sandstone Path Amorbach (L)

The 5.5 km long Amorbacher "Sandstone Path" leads you on a circular route out of the town over the Sommerberg through former vineyards to the Gotthardsberg. The landscape-varied round opens your eyes to many small elements of the cultural landscape, which are often considered everyday and unnoticed. The red color of the Buntsandstein runs like a guiding line through the stations of the trail: structures in the sandstone tell about its formation in geological time periods, carefully crafted sculptures and wayside shrines, but also seemingly ordinary fence posts provide information about the processing techniques of the sculptors and stonemasons. The path leads through former vineyards with their once painstakingly created dry stone walls to the "SommerBerger ARt en". It integrates red sandstone as material into its artworks and invites you to linger and meditate. The highlight of the round is the Gotthardsruin with its exposed location on a spur between Amorbach and Weilbach. Along the way, beautiful views over Amorbach and its surroundings open up again and again. Once a medieval robber baron castle, then a nunnery, and rebuilt as a church in the 17th century, the Gotthardsruin shows stylistic elements of Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance - all executed in the typical red Buntsandstein.
