We warmly welcome you to Rauenstein! Surely you have noticed the castle ruins as a landmark of Rauenstein.
For centuries, the once splendid castle was owned by the noble family of Schaumburg. Almost completely destroyed during the Thirty Years' War, the bergfried was only renovated in 2006. Since then, volunteers have been taking care to preserve the complex as well as possible for visitors.
A gem is also the new castle in Rauenstein. It houses a porcelain museum. In addition to porcelain craftsmanship, Rauenstein has long been home to the toy industry.
The company Schildkröt, the oldest doll manufacturer in Germany, still produces here today. In the small but very worthwhile Schildkröt doll museum, you learn more about the moving history of the Rauenstein toy factory.
After all these discoveries, we invite you to also conquer the Rennsteig. As treasure hunters, you are exactly right here with us. On your way to the Rennsteig, follow the trail of gold! Rauenstein lies in the valley of the Grümpen, one of the richest gold-bearing mountain rivers in Germany. With a lot of luck and perseverance, you might also wash a small gold nugget from the Grümpen. In the gold museum in the district Theuern, you can get the necessary equipment for this. You will pass the gold washing place and may try your luck yourself. Usually, you will not get rich, but the fun you will have is priceless!
Arrived in Limbach, you can continue following the Rennsteig. However, a detour to the peaceful and historically significant Greiner crypt should be planned first.
