The whole thing goes back to a rather crazy story. After a very long dry period, a Schnetter was sent to the pharmacy in Eisfeld to buy a thunderstorm. The quack in Eisfeld was a joker and put a quickly caught bumblebee into a box and sold it to the Schnetter as a thunderstorm. He happily set off again on the way back to Schnett.
When he shook the box, he could even hear thunder. Eventually, curiosity got the better of him and he opened the box a little — and the bumblebee buzzed away... When he finally arrived in Schnett, it was pouring rain. And everyone was sure that was the thunderstorm from Eisfeld.
Of course, the story is much nicer when told by an original Schnetter! Here even the smallest dwarf knows the story.
The Schnetter have a second nickname as well. They are also called the "twist carvers". The background of this nickname is not quite as funny. The people in this mountain village were poor and often earned their daily bread by carving small wooden items.
In the local heritage room in the village center, you can admire many interesting witnesses from this time. There you can also see beautifully painted chests and cabinets. The craft of colorful decorations used to be widespread but is now almost extinct. Even the interior of St. Oswald Church is adorned with ornaments from the Schnetter chest painting.
On your beautiful way to the Rennsteig, you will hike over the Simmersberg with a magnificent view. You will pass Heubach, where the "Rennsteig ladder" branches off to Heubach, up to the mountain station of the Masserberg ski lift.
