The Free State of Thuringia has already designated the “Green Belt Thuringia” as a National Nature Monument in 2018: over a length of 763 km! Here, visitors can deeply immerse themselves in nature and listen to the natural surroundings. The easy circular hike is especially suitable for families and easy to navigate even with a stroller. This is otherwise quite difficult on the Green Belt, as the patrol road follows the state border and naturally does not take the topography into account.
Various display boards and interactive elements explain the special features of nature along the Green Belt. The route starts in the center of Truckendorf at the Old School, which is now a community center. Right next to it is a nature-friendly overnight spot for hikers on the Green Belt.
If you cross over the border stream at the Weihersmühle further towards Bavaria, you reach the first train station building for the district of Sonneberg after a few minutes. The Görsdorf station, like the Werra railway, fell into a Sleeping Beauty slumber due to the German division.

No special equipment is required for the short distance; hiking boots are very advantageous on the patrol road due to the perforated plates.
Please do not leave the path. On the one hand because of the surrounding nature reserves, and on the other because of the border relics.
For the journey, please use the A73 exit Eisfeld South and follow the signs towards Schalkau and Görsdorf.
Truckendorf is poorly accessible by public transport. The nearest train station is in Schalkau, 5 km away.
Free parking is available at the cemetery in Truckendorf.

Along the way, you will find the ruins of the Weihersmühle. The homestead was razed as part of the border security measures by the border troops of the GDR.
