Großarl: Filzmoosalm - Filzmoossattel - Filzmooshörndl - Remsteinkopf - Bichlalm

The trail begins gently in the Ellmautal at the Grundlehen parking area. A rustic alpine path leads through quiet forest passages to the Filzmoosalm – a first oasis in the midst of alpine landscape. The quiet humming of insects and the vastness of the alpine pasture make you realise how sensitive and at the same time lively this natural and cultural area is. Gates and fence passages along the way tell of rural craftsmanship and centuries-old alpine culture – please pass with care. As you climb higher, the view opens up: at the Filzmoossattel and on the Filzmooshöhe, the Draugstein stands as a silent guardian over the valley. The ascent to the Filzmooshörndl leads to a quiet, expansive mountain landscape where solitude and panoramic views intertwine. Those who prefer a more leisurely pace can skip the Filzmooshörndl and follow the Ellmautal-Höhenweg trail to the Stangersattel. The path winds gently through a varied high alpine zone, past small pools and black and cranberry bushes, which accompany the trail with quiet natural details.

The path to Remsteinkopf marks the dramatic climax of the crossing: a hidden high valley basin offering panoramic views and deep vistas. The descent to Bichlalm leads through open pastures where nature and human use are in balance. After a rest, the final, intense descent awaits with the ‘Himmelsleiter’.

At the Finsterwald farm, you can take a car or hiking taxi down to the valley from the Finsterwald farm. Alternatively, the trail continues downhill to Grossarl.
