It is not only one of the classics but still one of the absolute highlights of all motorcycle routes in Austria, indeed the entire Alpine region. And it is undoubtedly part of every biker's must-do list to have conquered the Großglockner High Alpine Road at least once with pleasure.
About 2,500 meters of altitude must be mastered with numerous ups and downs over a length of 50 kilometers. The highest point of the road is at the Edelweiß Peak at 2,571m. 𡱠2467 m 𡳠2279 m Slope: Ø ð¡± 5.4 % 𡳠5.5 % Max: 𡱠9.7 % 𡳠14.8 % All those who skip the glacier road to Franz-Joseph-Höhe miss the highlight of the entire trip,” many travel guides warn about the Tauern. Rightly so, because the view of the majestic Großglockner and the Pasterze, still the largest glacier in the Eastern Alps, is unique.
Großglockner High Alpine Road 🡱 2467 m 🡳 2279 m The mountain pass with 26 curves leads through Austria's largest national park, the Hohe Tauern. All rest stops along this Alpine road offer an unforgettable view. Of course, a trip on the Großglockner High Alpine Road also includes a detour to the visitor center Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe at the highest point of the road (2,571 m). Park your car and experience up close the breathtaking mountains, the incomparable nature, and of course the Pasterze, a fascinating glacier. The observation tower offers you the opportunity to look out for the inhabitants of the national park: chamois, ibex, eagles, griffon vultures, and bearded vultures. The visitor center houses several restaurants and serves as a starting point for mountain hikes.
