This exceptional loop takes you deep into the heart of an area designated a “Grand Site de France”: the Cirque de Navacelles. Nestled between the vast, rocky expanses of the Larzac Plateau and the coolness of the Vis Valley, this route offers a true immersion into the soul of the Grands Causses. You’ll alternate between sections at the base of impressive cliffs, dizzying panoramic views from the two lookout points, and walks through villages with authentic charm. It’s an ideal outing for lovers of the great outdoors, where untamed nature, pastoral life, and architectural heritage come together at every turn.

1
Starting from Caylar, the route winds through the open landscapes of the Larzac region southward toward Saint-Pierre-de-la-Fage. Upon arriving in the village, you’ll see a windmill towering over the surrounding area.
2
The route continues toward Saint-Maurice-Navacelles, immersing you in the heart of the typical Causse landscape. Leaving Saint-Pierre-de-la-Fage, you’ll pass through Mas de Bedos and enjoy the vast pastures and wild open spaces along this route, where it’s not uncommon to spot horses and cows grazing peacefully in the meadows.
3
As you leave Saint-Maurice-Navacelles, the road winds through a soothing pastoral landscape. You’ll travel through vast pastures where, in the spring, fields of asphodels offer a delicate sight. As you pass near the Prunarède estate, keep your eyes peeled: it’s not uncommon to come across herds of horses and sheep there, before reaching the Baume Auriol site. There you’ll find a seasonal tourist office, perfect for an informative stop.
4
La Baume Auriol offers a unique view of the Cirque de Navacelles. The route then takes you to the village of Blandas and its own lookout point, which reveals the Cirque and its hamlet from a different angle. The road then begins its descent toward the Vis Valley, reaching the village of Vissec.
5
This final leg gradually brings you back to the open landscapes of the Larzac. You’ll pass by the Château de Sorbs, a testament to the local heritage, and traverse the village of Le Cros before returning to your starting point, thus completing your total immersion in the world of the Grands Causses.
A75 - Exit 49
- Stops at the lookout points: Take your time at Blandas and La Baume Auriol; each viewpoint offers a different perspective on the Navacelles “Grand Site de France.”
- Sun protection: The plateau is very exposed to the sun, so be sure to bring appropriate sun protection, as shade is scarce.
- Respect for animals: Slow down when approaching herds and follow best practices.
