M67 From Celtic History to Medieval Castle Ruins

This varied hike combines nature, history, and breathtaking views into an unforgettable experience. The starting point is Schwarzenbach in Lower Austria, also known as the “Celtic Village.” This is because, in the 2nd century B.C., one of the largest city-like settlements of the Celts in the Eastern Alps was located here. Today, the open-air museum, with its many events, keeps this historical heritage alive and brings it to life. From the center of Schwarzenbach, the route heads toward Unterort and through the market town. The trail climbs gently across the alpine pasture and the Schön before continuing on to the idyllically situated Walsauerbrunn and past the Pauliberg, Austria’s most recently extinct volcano. Via the Klosterberg, you’ll finally reach the picturesque town of Landsee with its imposing castle ruins—one of the largest castle ruins in Central Europe.

Along the way, you’ll be treated to magnificent panoramic views over the rolling hills of the Bucklige Welt all the way to the Landsee ruins.
