The Path of Legends: Using informative display boards, the path runs through the center of the legendary mountain village and highlights viewpoints, integrates accents of the pilgrimage character, reflects its own history as a mountaineering village, opens up paths into nature and to historical features. Here you learn more about the history of Heiligenblut and the people who shaped the place.
PATH of LEGENDS
You start your round walk at the village square of Heiligenblut at Großglockner. The square with its striking pavilion is an ideal place for festivities such as the famous Glockner Lamb Festival in September, the colorful herb blessing on August 15, or the pilgrimage festival on June 28. Diagonally opposite the village square is the info & booking center, where you get all useful information and can register for routes and excursions. The mountain guide office is also located here. Just a few steps from the village square lies the famous pilgrimage church St. Vincent. Built in the late 14th century, the church building is based on the legend of the “Holy Blood”.
The size of this Gothic, rural sacred building is explained by the wealth gained from gold mining by its founders, the Diocese of Salzburg. A magnificent testimony to this is the Gothic Veronica altar from the 15th century in the northern side chapel, covered with leaf gold from the Tauern mountains. On your walk at the cemetery, pay attention to the tomb of Alfred Margrave von Pallavicini. The Viennese nobleman was one of the most famous Alpine pioneers of the High Tauern. His legendary reputation is based on the first ascent of the steep ice couloir on the north face of Großglockner, which has since borne his name and is one of the most significant climbing routes in the entire Eastern Alps: The Pallavicini Gully. Margrave Pallavicini lost his life years later when he fell to his death along with his mountain guides on the west ridge of Großglockner. His family then dedicated the forged iron book “To the Victims of the Mountains” to the parish, in which all victims of Großglockner are immortalized.
You continue the walk and descend to the valley floor to the district “Winkl” with several hotels and guesthouses.
A few meters from the Hotel Kärntnerhof, you cross the still young Möll river and walk down the valley along “Hadergasse”.
After the campsite, cross the road, cross the bridge and follow the hiking trail to the youth hostel. In the following small park (on the left of the youth hostel), you will already see the "Path of Legends." Along informative boards, you will learn much about the history of the place and the people who shaped it.
NOTE:
Not far from the campsite, at the end of a small reservoir, lies the Sonnblick guesthouse, where a small but attractively designed high ropes course and skill course await adventurers. In the adjacent Möll gorge, a breathtaking via ferrata with several suspension bridges over the waterfalls was built in 2012! For climbing enthusiasts, a "must detour".
