If you have a brain, protect it!
A helmet is a must when mountain biking.
Correct clothing!
Always carry warm clothing and a spare jersey, especially in the early and late season. In higher altitudes, bad weather without rain protection is unpleasant.
Carry emergency equipment!
First aid kit, bike repair kit (spare tube, pump, tools), map, mobile phone, and possibly GPS should always be with you (Note: Reception is not guaranteed everywhere in the mountains).
Keep drinking & eat on time!
Drink enough and plan a timely stop.
Adjust speed!
Always ride defensively and only as fast as you can stop safely or avoid oncoming traffic. Always be alert. Cool are those who pass pedestrians and hikers slowly.
Correct self-assessment!
Do not overstrain yourself or your companions. Plan reserves. A defect before the last mountain or bad weather drains stamina and morale.
Start on time!
Especially in the early and late season, ensure you reach your daily goal well before dark and plan reserves.
Bad weather in the mountains!
If bad weather approaches, quickly leave higher altitudes (descend or turn back)! With the bike you can quickly return to the starting point or the valley. Consider the possibility of snowfall. Impassable sections! If obstacles appear on the route (snow, mudslide, windthrow, etc.), make sure you can get through safely. Never leave the marked path! Turn back early enough if you do not feel safe!
