Route over the Thenauriegel

Starting from the Breitenbrunn tourist information, cross the main road and walk a short way down the lakeshore road. On the right are some beautiful old wine cellars, of which you will see more of this type on the route. Follow the lakeshore road. Here, a detour to the parish church with the military cemetery is worthwhile. The “Rosenberg” farm road takes you in a curve through undeveloped area, where there is a wonderful view over the vineyards and fields, the reed belt, and finally Lake Neusiedl. Opposite the tennis hall, cross the main road, go briefly left, and then turn right into the Thenauriegel nature reserve. White rocks, remnants of limestone deposits from the time when the sea once rolled here, rise repeatedly. The path leads through a ditch and finally through a small woodland where interesting rocks appear again. Upon reaching the cherry blossom bike path, there is an opportunity for a short rest; information boards provide insight into the fauna and flora of the area. On the way back, a modern wayside shrine testifies to the population's connection with faith. Through vineyards and fields, the path leads back to Breitenbrunn to the historic wine cellar ring. Here, there is a nice view of the tower museum, the church, and the Lake Neusiedl lying behind. Some cellars offer a place to stop for refreshments. From here, the way returns to the starting point.
Highlights
• Rare plants such as the dwarf iris, the spring Adonis, or various grasses and succulents grow on the dry grassland area of the Thenauriegel. The white limestone rocks are witnesses of the time when a sea once rolled here. Today, grazing is used to prevent overgrowth and preserve this natural treasure.
• Above the nature reserve, cherry trees line the path. In spring, they show magnificent blossoms; in early summer, their sweet fruits ripen.
• A special feature is the historic wine cellar ring: Already in the 19th century, the wine growers used the climatic conditions of green roofs combined with proper ventilation for optimal storage of their wine. Today, some of these cellars are used as taverns. A show cellar provides insight into the history of wine growing by appointment.
