The route from Bratislava to Čunovo begins by leaving the historic centre and crossing into Petržalka, a district defined by its vast post‑war housing estates and broad green corridors, where the Danube embankments offer long, open views back toward the castle and old town. As the trail continues south, the urban density gradually softens into the more village‑like atmosphere of Rusovce, a settlement with deep historical layers—from Roman remains to the 19th‑century Rusovce Mansion, set amid lakes, wetlands, and the protected landscapes of the Dunajské luhy nature reserve. Beyond Rusovce, the route enters increasingly rural terrain, following quiet roads and forest edges toward Čunovo, one of Bratislava’s southernmost districts. Here, the scenery opens into a mosaic of Danube backwaters, floodplain forests, and the engineered waterways of the Čunovo dam, with the village itself marked by its baroque church and calm, almost borderland atmosphere. This stage blends urban modernism, ancient history, and the wide, watery landscapes of the Danube’s southern reaches—ending at the threshold of Slovakia’s great river wetlands.

Leaving Bratislava, the trail crosses the Danube and follows its south bank. The Blue Church stands in the city centre, built in the early 20th century in the Hungarian Art Nouveau style. Beyond the city, the path enters flat riverside land, where embankments, side channels, and gravel banks line the river. At Rusovce lie the remains of Gerulata, a Roman fort on the Limes Road that ran along the Danube frontier. Parts of its walls, foundations, and inscriptions are preserved, and finds from the site are exhibited in the local museum. Nearby stands Rusovce Castle, surrounded by an English landscape park. The trail continues through woodland and past former gravel pits. Near Čunovo, the Danubiana Meulensteen Art Museum stands on a peninsula projecting into the river. At Čunovo, the trail reaches the border and divides into two branches: one following the Danube through Slovakia, and the other crossing into Hungary. Both paths continue downstream, guided by the same river, and will meet again at Komárno.

This stage of the Sultans Trail requires standard long-distance hiking equipment. Weather protection is essential, including rain and cold gear, depending on the season. In late spring and early summer, mosquito deterrents are strongly recommended, while during the hot season, sun protection and a sufficient water supply are essential. Reliable offline navigation tools should be carried at all times.
Be aware that water levels in the Danube and its tributaries may vary considerably. At high water, the shoreline passage may be flooded.
