Römerland Carnuntum Radtour - Variante Fischamend

Vienna – Mannswörth – Airport – Fischamend – Maria Ellend – Haslau/Danube – Wildungsmauer – Petronell – Hainburg

The Römerland Carnuntum bike tour begins at one of Vienna’s oldest and most historic sites, right above the ruins of the former Roman camp “Vindobona”—the Hoher Markt. From here, the route follows the Danube Canal Bike Path to Neualbern.

Shortly before Schwechat, the bike route splits into two options: a more leisurely and longer route leads through Schwadorf, Göttlesbrunn, and Höflein to Petronell-Carnuntum. The route described here—the more direct and shorter option—runs through Fischamend and past the airport along the Danube, also leading to Petronell-Carnuntum.

The charming town of Fischamend lies at the confluence of the Fischa and Danube rivers. The picturesque town center, with its historic buildings and churches, is well worth a brief detour. We also highly recommend the local history museum in the medieval Fischa Tower and the nature paradise “Die kleine Au” right in the heart of Fischamend.

Along the route near Haslau an der Donau and Wildungsmauer, there are frequent opportunities to take detours into the Donau-Auen National Park.

Just before Petronell-Carnuntum, you’ll see the imposing Heidentor, arguably Austria’s most famous Roman monument. Now you’ll be cycling through Austria’s largest archaeological landscape. Petronell-Carnuntum is home to the Roman city of Carnuntum, featuring the Roman quarter and the amphitheater. Here, the fascinating world of the Romans is brought back to life.

The journey into antiquity continues to Bad Deutsch-Altenburg, where a visit to the newly renovated Carnuntinum Museum—Austria’s largest Roman museum—is well worth your time. In Bad Deutsch-Altenburg, you can take a break at the “Zum Marc Aurel” bike rest stop. Near the Danube, the tour finally leads to the picturesque medieval town of Hainburg an der Donau. Imposing city gates, the castle on the Schlossberg, and mighty city walls serve as reminders of the glorious past under King Ottokar II of Bohemia. Tip: A museum well worth visiting is located in the Wienertor, the largest medieval city gate in Europe.

If you’re in the mood, you can stop along the Danube to read aphorisms by Marcus Aurelius. The Römerland Carnuntum Tour ends at the Hainburg boat landing. From Hainburg, you can also take the train back to Vienna.
