The hike begins directly at the Restaurant Mattmark at the dam wall. First, the hiker goes through the pedestrian tunnel on the right side of the lake.
At the end of the reservoir is the Dischtelalp, from where the Monte Rosa route continues over the Monte Moro Pass (golden Madonna) towards Macugnaga. From Dischtelalp, the circular path follows a narrower trail on the left side of the lake back to the dam.
The reservoir, which was inaugurated in 1969, hides some historical stories and dramatic legends beneath its waters. These can be explored in the exhibition at the restaurant.

Use only marked hiking trails and follow all signposts and instructions – for your own safety, for the protection of livestock, and to avoid disturbing wildlife.
Be considerate of other trail users and the environment. Take your waste and that of others with you.

Weather conditions in the mountains can change very quickly and without warning. Appropriate clothing and sufficient provisions (food and drink) are very important. Turn back early in case of unstable weather.
Do not go onto glaciers without a mountain guide.
Observe warning signs indicating hazards.
Inform third parties about your route and, if possible, never go alone.
Pay attention to the opening hours of mountain railways.
