ð For 2,500 years it has been used as a passage over the main Alpine ridge. The pass summit offers, besides the opportunity to fill the gas tank again cheaply on the Austrian side, the chance to invest the saved euros in incredible amounts of bric-a-brac, tchotchkes, and souvenirs. The old village of Brenner tells the exciting story of probably the best-known Alpine pass.
ð The Brenner is a 1370 m above sea level high crossing in the eastern main Alpine ridge. It connects the southern and northern Tyrolean sections of the Wipptal, which here separates the Stubai Alps (to the west) from the Zillertal Alps (to the east). Together with St. Gotthard, Simplon, and Mont Cenis, the pass is one of the four most important routes of Alpine transit, and the most used one for road traffic. It is also the busiest connection between Austria and Italy.
The Brenner Pass is the lowest cut through the entire main Alpine ridge and at the same time the most famous border pass in the Eastern Alps. It connects Steinach in Tyrol with Sterzing in South Tyrol. This road, perfectly developed, is the most heavily used connection between Austria and Italy (although a toll motorway has existed parallel for several decades). Therefore, this pass road is only partly recommended for motorcyclists. There are no real hairpin bends. However, you can enjoy great scenic views – and can watch the 146.5 meter high Europabrücke (the highest bridge in Austria) well. For those who like shopping: At the pass summit in the town of Brenner, there has been a huge outlet store for several years. Much more driving fun is offered on the "old Brenner road" B 182 or SS 12.
