This hiking trail is the Werra-Burgen-Steig (trail marker blue square on white background or X5). The entire hike is 350 km and begins at the Werra source up to Hann-Münden in Hesse. The stage described here goes from Dietlas to Bad Salzungen, exactly from Dietlas Castle to Frankenstein ruin. The hike starts at Dietlas Castle, leaving the village on a hiking path towards Merkers. Upon arrival in Merkers, you see the Merkers show mine, which is always worth a visit. At the foot of the Krayenberg, the path climbs to the castle, which is sometimes open. Below the castle, the path continues to Tiefenort. There you pass the church and hike to the Zeppelin stone, a memorial stone for the emergency landing of a Zeppelin in World War I. After that, the path turns right and descends toward Unterrohn. Beyond the village, the trail heads to Bad Salzungen; this forest and meadow path is in poor condition and not easy to walk. Upon arriving in Bad Salzungen, you go to the graduation tower (spa facility), then hike to the village Kloster. From there, the final part of the hike begins, the ascent to the Frankenstein ruin. At the destination, you have a beautiful view of the Thuringian Forest.
Sturdy footwear, closed legwear due to ticks on meadow paths.
Parking at the linden tree or at the sports field
Tip 1
The steep climb to Krayenburg is best on Sundays when the Krayenburg Association opens the castle to the public. Usually, there is coffee and cake or a small snack. If you ask politely, you might also be allowed up the tower. From there, you have a beautiful view towards Hesse, the Rhön, and the Thuringian Forest.
Tip 2
A visit to the graduation tower in Bad Salzungen, now a spa house, and a relaxing walk in the spa facility with salty air can be very refreshing.
