Professor Tegtmeier Path

Professor Dr. Adolf Tegtmeier (1894-1975), honorary citizen of the city of Bad Berka, was until 1966 Medical Director of the Central Clinic. Since 1924 he fought as a doctor in the Sophienheilstätte on the Emskopf above Munich against the widespread disease tuberculosis. In 1934 he took over as chief physician the management of the sanatorium. Bed rest cures in the forest-rich healthy Bad Berka air were initially an important aspect in the treatment of his lung patients. Meanwhile, a scaled-down replica of one of the then customary lying halls opposite the Bad Berka Central Clinic commemorates the former bed rest cures. With the introduction of new X-ray, treatment and surgical methods, Prof. Dr. Tegtmeier achieved great healing successes in the following years. After tuberculosis spread again strongly due to World War II, Tegtmeier developed plans for a new modern clinic. The Central Clinic for Lung Diseases Bad Berka was built under his direction from 1951. It was the first major new hospital construction in the GDR. Prof. Dr. Tegtmeier contributed greatly to combating tuberculosis and to the reorientation of the Central Clinic as a leading heart center of the country. The circular hiking trail leads past stations that were particularly important to Prof. Dr. Adolf Tegtmeier: his former house at Max-Linke-Straße 9, which he lived in from 1951 until his death; his workplace - the Central Clinic - and the already mentioned lying hall, which also serves as a bus shelter and contains many interesting information about curing tuberculosis. As a very nature-loving person, Prof. Tegtmeier loved relaxing hikes in the nearby forest.
