Over the first elevation, the Tiergarten, the path leads to the former spar mine „Andreas“. The shady seating area and the spar fountain invite you to rest. Not far is the „Bommende Eller“, an open pit where limestone was mined for iron smelting. You continue to Rechtalswiese with a rebuilt hoist.
We recommend a detour to Hachelstein – a rock in an exposed location with a shelter and great view. Past the Kothengraben tunnel and an original stamping mill follows the show mine „Finstertal“, the largest attraction of the route (April–Oct.). A red iron ore and brown ore mine operated until 1934. A detour to the historic hammer smithy in the town with exhibition and demonstration of the old craft is also worthwhile.

Keep direction Schmalkalden towards Steinbach-Hallenberg/Oberhof
At the traffic light crossroads Mc Donalds turn towards Asbach
In Asbach, oriented by the church, drive to a parking lot
Take the South Thuringia Railway to the Hochschule Schmalkalden stop, then walk along Näherstiller Straße towards the university to the junction with Asbacher Straße and follow this to the center of Asbach, near the church.
By bus line 452 from Schmalkalden bus station to the stop Asbach, church.
