You start your hike in Maria Alm and drive by car to the former inn Rohrmoos, where you can park conveniently. From here, your challenging and scenic mountain route begins. First, you follow the forest paths that lead you through a beautiful landscape. The fresh mountain air and the impressive nature around you will motivate you to keep going. You can enjoy the tranquility of the surroundings and catch the first views of the surrounding peaks. After you reach the Freithofalm – an unmanaged alpine pasture offering a nice break – you switch to the alpine trail. Here the path becomes more demanding, and you should definitely bring sure-footedness and freedom from dizziness. Pay attention to the markings and be careful, especially on steeper passages. The ascent to the pass requires some effort but is rewarded with magnificent views. From the pass, you can admire the surrounding mountains and enjoy the impressive alpine landscape. Note that there are no refreshment stops on this route, so take enough provisions and water with you. Plan your time well so that you return to the parking lot safely and on time. Have fun on your hike and fully enjoy nature!
You start from the former inn Rohrmoos in the Krallergraben, where you can find parking facilities. Follow path no. 23 and continue hiking on path no. 414, passing the Krallerbauer to the Kaseregg Chapel. From there, the further ascent leads to Freithofalm, where you pass a cozy hunting hut. The path now becomes steeper and leads you through dwarf pines, followed by scree and rocks, until you reach the Buchauerscharte. For the descent, you can take the same path back. Alternatively, you have the option to descend via the Riemannhaus (path 401) and then take the alpine Ramseidersteig to Maria Alm (401A). This descent variant takes about 4 hours.

Self-assessment: Before every mountain route, check your physical fitness and correctly assess your strength as well as that of your companions – especially your children! Sure-footedness and freedom from dizziness are often very important!
Planning and preparation: Plan every intended mountain route thoroughly beforehand. Hiking maps and guides as well as information from alpine clubs and locals like mountain guides and hut keepers can be helpful.
Equipment: In the mountains, you need appropriate equipment and clothing, especially sturdy, high footwear with a grippy sole. Weather and cold protection are essential; the weather can often change unexpectedly.
Emergency equipment: Take a complete first aid kit, a mobile phone with power bank, and possibly a satellite phone with you.
Roped teams: For alpine tours with technical sections, it is advisable to move in roped teams. Practice the right securing techniques and communication with your partners.
Glacier crossing: Watch out for crevasses and inform yourself about glacier conditions. Use the correct technique when crossing and always keep a safety distance.
Proper handling of altitude: Watch for symptoms of altitude sickness (headache, nausea, dizziness). Ascend slowly and allow breaks for acclimatization.
Weather forecasts: Pay attention to current weather conditions at: zamg.at or www.uwz.at.
Togetherness: Observe the 10 rules for proper interaction with grazing animals and do not leave any litter in nature!
Do not dislodge stones: Avoid dislodging stones, as this can seriously endanger other hikers. Marked areas with rockfall danger should be crossed as quickly and carefully as possible.
Turn back in time: This is not shame but a sign of prudence. It becomes necessary if the weather changes, fog sets in, or if the path is too difficult or in poor condition.
Emergency numbers: Alpine emergency: 140, International emergency: 112, Rescue: 144
