How was the night on the alpine pasture? Isn't it a heavenly pleasure to forget everyday life high above it? To switch off the mobile phone and listen only to the voice of nature? To see in the evening how the lights in the valley turn on and are outshone by stars light years away? Today you keep everyday life at bay, as the route goes wildly romantic over high and low alpine pastures. Wonderful views alternate with delicious alpine delicacies. Today's route is an alpine path stage straight out of a picture book and ends with a real highlight because the stage destination – the top-modern Hofgasteinerhaus – is located in the immediate vicinity of the Schlossalm cable car station. Discover the playful side of the mountains up here with a viewing platform, slackline park, and much more. We promise you: after this day, you will sleep fantastically in one of the 42 beds at 1,950 meters above sea level.
Almenweg story/stories
The sparkling Gasteiner Ache flows north through the Gastein Valley. The river plays an important role in the famous legend “The Ring of the Weitmoserin”. This proud woman, who came from a wealthy Gastein mining family, is said to have refused help to a beggar woman, who then cursed her and foretold the end of her riches. Enraged, the proud woman then pulled her precious ring from her finger and threw it into the Gasteiner Ache with the words, “Just as this ring will never see the daylight again, so will the ore in the Weitmoser shafts never cease!” and rode away. The next day at noon, when she was served a large trout, the ring fell from its belly. Soon after, one misfortune followed another, and gold and silver mining ceased. This meant the downfall of the Weitmoser family. Today, the 16th-century Weitmoser Castle houses the gourmet restaurant of the Scharfetter family: local fish is also on the menu.
Almenweg refreshment
At the Fundner Heimalm, hikers are treated to fresh alpine products such as milk, cheese, quark, farmhouse bread, bacon, or sausages from their own production. The schnapps is also home-distilled. The fresh Pofesen and Bauernkrapfen are considered insider tips. In the vote for the Salzburger Alpine Summer Hut of the Year 2016, Fundneralm achieved 2nd place!
You’ll now descend about 100 meters along the trail until a forest road branches off to the right. Follow it for quite a while, initially at the same elevation and later down two switchbacks toward the south.
As soon as you leave the coniferous forest, it is not far to the first managed alpine pasture. The Fundner Heimalm (1,380 m) with its own dairy at the foot of the towering Guggenstein is reached after around 1.5 hours of walking and invites you to a short rest. The best alpine products are served at the hut: the ideal tip for a small snack!
From the Fundner Heimalm, it is a few meters down to the Leidalmbach. On the other side, the alpine path leads uphill initially always along the Leidalmbach (path No. 127A) through a shady mixed forest towards the managed and idyllically located Brandner Hochalm (1,770 m). Here, hikers are also spoiled with a dreamy view as well as homemade alpine products such as Kaspressknödel.
From here the wide path gradually turns into a narrow trail and leads along path No. 127A into a secluded valley cut through an archaic karst landscape to the Kleine Scharte. Here you enter a different world: avalanche control systems and the longest ski run in Salzburg contrast with the mountain wilderness. At the Schlossalm ski area, untouched nature and modern interventions intertwine. This adventure mountain is accessible by cable car in winter as well as summer and offers guests a wide range of activities. From the Kleine Scharte, walking south along path 127A, the stage destination is reached in a few minutes at the Schlossalmbahn cable car station.
For overnight stays, there are two options:
From the cable car station, the modern Naturfreundehaus Hofgasteinerhaus at 1,950 meters above sea level can be reached in 500 meters via a road (it is located directly on stage 7 of the Salzburger Almenweg).
Accommodations in Bad Hofgastein can also be reached by the Schlossalmbahn cable car.

During the summer months, numerous cultural events take place at various locations in the Gastein Valley. Under the title Alm:Klassik, various alpine huts are also transformed into open-air concert halls. The classical concerts in the open air – performed by ensembles from the Salzburg Philharmonic – promise a very special musical experience.
