On today's stage, just over 17 kilometers are covered mainly on paved roads as well as forest and alpine paths to Dorfgastein. If the weather is favorable, you should take a dip in the Böndlsee in the morning. Or you can stroll through the village of Lend after the first section, which goes exclusively downhill. Geographically, Lend belongs to the Pinzgau: in the small village center, the Verwess Castle testifies that Lend already played an important role as a transport hub during the time of the Salzburg Prince-Archbishops. The gold and silver melting works were housed in the village, and the local rulers often stayed overnight in the castle during their travels from the residence city to the Gastein Valley. In the Gastein Valley, as in other Tauern valleys, gold and silver were mined, which brought great wealth to the Archbishopric of Salzburg. As a place for refreshment, the Kögerlalm or Amoseralm, both certified alpine summer huts, are recommended high above Dorfgastein and offer a beautiful view of the Hochkönig massif. For overnight stays, in the valley village Dorfgastein or on the Heinreichalm, the stage variant 4a is preferred.
Almenweg living witnesses
The beautifully restored Verwess Castle in Lend was built around 1600 and equipped with the so-called Princes' Rooms in the mid-18th century. The castle served as the office of the mining and smelting manager of the Salzburg Prince-Archbishops at the gold and silver smelting works in Lend. Today, the building is used as the municipal office. The Handlwirt inn is also worth a second look: the house, built in log construction, features striking baroque decorations on the wooden facade. This so-called ornamental or painted shot has become very rare nowadays.
Almenweg refreshment
At the Böndlsee, directly at the Seebichlhof/bathing area Böndlsee, there is a self-service box called “Heimat Innergebirg” with fine regional products such as sausages or cheese: an ideal opportunity to fill up your backpack. At the Kögerlalm, hikers are pampered with homemade delicacies and farm products.

From the Böndlsee bathing area, the Salzburger Almenweg leads on the small road southwest or south, ignoring a fork with a left path going straight ahead and following the road downhill to Lend in the Salzach Valley (up to here is about 3.8 kilometers and about one hour walking time).
Just west of the train station, the railway tracks and the Salzach are crossed. After the bridge, turn right towards the town center, then follow the main road left uphill. The Almenweg passes under the federal road junction B167 and B311 and continues along the small road about 300 m west until a road sharply branches off left in the direction of Höhenwart. From here, a relatively steep forest path with a beautiful view of the Salzach Valley leads to the mountain station of the drag lift. Then it continues on the same forest path through the forest to the managed, 1,360 meters high certified alpine summer hut, the Kögerlalm, where a stop is worthwhile.
After the break, the path leads eastward to the Drei-Waller Chapel. Here, the variant 4a to Heinreichalm branches off from the main route to Dorfgastein – on the main route to Dorfgastein, however, the downward hiking path is chosen, which leads over the unmanaged Huberalm to another fork in a left hairpin bend. Although the path over the forest road also leads to Dorfgastein, the Salzburger Almenweg follows the straight hiking path. First uphill to the unmanaged Stoffalm and to a fork. Here downhill to the managed Amoseralm, which invites you to another stop high above Dorfgastein.
From the Amoseralm, the forest road leads first downhill through the left hairpin bend and then from the next right hairpin bend steadily downhill over the Bärenweg and finally through a ditch into the hamlet Unterberg, which is already in the valley floor of the Gastein Valley. From here, the road leads parallel to the Gasteiner Ache south until the river is crossed opposite the beginning of Dorfgastein. Now right along the road for about 100 m until behind the tourist information a road leads left into the village center of Dorfgastein and to the hiking starting point at the municipal office.
If the well over two-and-a-half-hour descent on the original route from the Kögerlalm to the valley is too long, you can, by prior telephone reservation, be brought to Dorfgastein by the local taxi company Haunsperger/Wandertaxi, T. +43 664 3453735 or Taxi Gasteinertal, T. +43 676 5252008.

The Drei-Waller Chapel, shortly after the Kögerlalm, commemorates three pilgrims who, according to legend, walked barefoot from Gastein to the Holy Land. Upon arriving there, their greatest wish was to return safely to their homeland. However, on the return journey, one misfortune followed another: when they finally reached the valley entrance completely exhausted and saw their homeland, their hearts are said to have stopped, and they died. The chapel was built exactly at this spot in their memory.
