The Riesling route leads from the market square through the wine town of Wachenheim out into the vineyard landscape towards Bad Dürkheim. Past the Wine Route Window, the path turns northwest shortly before Bad Dürkheim and runs back towards Wachenheim and up to the Wachtenburg. Here you can enjoy a panoramic view of Palatinate vineyards and the Palatinate Forest from the observation tower. A small museum presents the history of the Wachtenburg. The castle tavern offers typically rustic Palatinate cuisine. With fantastic views and a refreshing wine spritzer, you can quickly lose track of time. The circular route then continues back through the vineyards, past the Most Beautiful Wine View 2016, back to Wachenheim. Here you not only have a choice of various refreshment venues. The Schloss Wachenheim sparkling wine cellar and local winemakers also invite you to a tasting.

We start at the market square in front of the simultaneous St. George's Church and the Ludwig Chapel (Weinstraße - Kommerzienrat-Wagner-Straße) and walk into the Burgstraße. After about 200 meters, turn right onto a narrow path that runs along the Wachenheim town wall. On the left is the historic garden where vegetables from the medieval period are grown. Continue along the town wall until the path meets the war memorial on the Weinstraße (at the Bürgerspital). Continue turning left along the Weinstraße north to the traffic light intersection. From here, the circular hiking trail continues parallel to the German Wine Route on the left side towards Bad Dürkheim up to the 'Wine Route Window.' The path then leads us below the flag tower through the single vineyard 'Fuchsmantel' to the end of the valley. Now we go downhill again through the 'Kämmertberg' area to the vineyard 'Königswingert,' where we meet the German Wine Route hiking trail again. Now we hike south further downhill to Wachenheim and via Mühlwiesenstraße, Bornweg, Waldstraße, Burgstraße and finally right up Schlossgasse, along the footpath to the Wachtenburg. At the top, a magnificent panoramic view opens over the Rhine plain and the castle tavern invites you to rest. Behind the castle parking lot, the path continues on the same level through the vineyard 'Schlossberg' and then down many steps to Odinstalweg. At the first crossroads, we follow the German Wine Route hiking trail again on the right. We walk along the forest edge and then down over the stream steps into the vineyard sites 'Gerümpel,' 'Rechbächel,' and 'Goldbächel' to the Italian villa of the former J.L. Wolf winery on the Weinstraße. Along the Weinstraße, past neoclassical buildings and noble estates, we reach the market square again with the simultaneous St. George's Church, the Ludwig Chapel, and the market fountain. Here a visit to the Schloss Wachenheim sparkling wine cellar is worthwhile.
