The starting point of the Leininger Monastery Trail is the Nature Friends House in Hertlingshausen, which can also be used as an excursion restaurant or conference center. The old Sauhäuschen, past which we walk, was formerly a shelter and refuge for hunters and forest workers. Above Kieskautberg runs the boundary between the Freinsheim collective municipality and Grünstadt-Land.
Below the Leuchtenberg is the Schlüsselstein, marking the border of the Höningen monastery estate to the Ganerbenwald.
Höningen was first mentioned in documents in 1143. The Höningen monastery and St. Jakobs Church, the oldest Romanesque building in the Palatinate and older than the monastery, were formerly the cultural heart of Altleiningen.
The farmstead of Neuhof has existed since the 11th century and formerly belonged to the Höningen monastery.
UFFBASSE! - Campaign for considerate coexistence in nature
Fire & Smoking - Making fires, smoking, and barbecuing are strictly forbidden in the forest and must be avoided! Fires and thus great damage to nature and wildlife can only be prevented in this way. Be considerate when out and about - Always behave in a forward-looking, friendly, and considerate manner towards everyone you meet on the way. Nature conservation - Stay on the designated paths and avoid unnecessary noise when you are in nature. Leave the forest by dusk at the latest, so as not to disturb the rhythm of nocturnal animals. Picnic & Waste - Remember a garbage bag for the journey and take waste back home with you. Use only the furnished rest areas for breaks and picnics. Leash dogs - Please keep your dog on a leash at all times. Other visitors and animals will thank you.More info at: www.pfalz.de/uffbasse

Premium hiking with audio and video information
Along the path at a total of 9 locations, we have provided you with interesting information about the places and sights. You can follow the route using the description (here the links to the information on YouTube are marked as "stations") or you can use the official and free Rheinland-Pfalz experience app.
How it works on site:Start or install the Rheinland-Pfalz app, activate the GPS function of your smartphone, select the route, click on "open in app" and select the map view. Now you can start the route and at any symbol visible on the map, you can play the audio and video files. So you don’t have to look at your smartphone all the time and can enjoy the hike consciously with your head held high. As an introduction, we show you here in the video what awaits you on the Leininger Monastery Trail (Station 1).
The starting point of the Leininger Monastery Trail is the excursion restaurant and conference center of the Nature Friends, the Rahnenhof in Hertlingshausen (Station). We always follow the yellow marking with a stylized monastery: over quiet paths that make up most of the way, we reach the Old Sauhäuschen (Station). The shelter at a small forest spring originally served as a refuge for forest workers and hunters. Now we go up to the Kieskautberg (Station), the highest point of the hike. The mountain is 461 m high and lies two kilometers south of Carlsberg in the east of the Diemerstein Forest, as a part of the northern Palatinate Forest is called. On the further path, we circle around the Steinkopf; from here you have a nice view of the elevations of Mönchskappe, Ameisen-Kopf or Rahnfels. Past the Schlüsselstein (Station) and the Leuchtenberg, the route goes then towards Höningen. The Schlüsselstein (the Peter's key as a symbol of the clergy) marks the border of the monastery estate to the former Ganerbenwald (cooperative possession of several villages from the Rhine plain). Höningen (Station) (place to eat) with its former monastery and St. Jakobs Church (oldest Romanesque building in the Palatinate; restored medieval paintings) was once the cultural heart of Altleiningen. At the Neuhöfer spring (Station) the monastery trail crosses the Altleiningen Forest educational trail. Many stations explain tree species, grasses and shrubs, native birds, mushrooms and various wild species. We leave the Palatinate Forest, pass the former Neuhof monastery estate (Station) (today "Demeter" farm and nursery with a shop), continue through the Eckbach valley to the monastery village Hertlingshausen (Station) and from there back to the starting point of the route (place to eat) or back to the bus stop.

For our hiking routes, we recommend the following equipment as standard:
Sturdy footwear Weather-appropriate clothing Sun and rain protection A sufficient supply of food and drinks, as there are not always places to eat or shop available or open everywhere. Even though the paths are consistently well marked, it is advisable for safety reasons to always carry a suitable hiking map, so that you can quickly find a safe area in case of a thunderstorm or emergency.Especially in autumn, be aware that fallen leaves on the ground can hide unevenness, roots, stones, or holes in the path. You must expect such path impairments when hiking. If you think certain sections are impassable for you, you should bypass them. Especially in adverse weather conditions, natural paths can have muddy and slippery sections.
