Located in the Vercelli plain just north of the Po river, this forest is of great importance as it is one of the largest Po valley floodplain forests dominated by oak and hornbeam. The forest, completely surrounded by rice-growing environments, develops on a modest hill (La Costa), emerging from the low Vercelli plain and on a flat area at its base.
At the top of the hill and on the south-facing slope, the forest experiences warmer and drier climatic conditions, with several plant species exclusive to this area; in the northern part, instead, in a swampy area for most of the year with some springs, a black alder forest (Alnus glutinosa) develops.
During Roman times the forest was sacred, probably to the god Apollo. The park protects what remains on the Montarolo hill of the vast forests that covered the Vercelli plain and which were cut down during the Middle Ages in major reclamation projects. The Partecipanza was the group of families to whom Bonifacio I, Marquis of Monferrato, granted the use of the forest in 1202. (route geomapped by Claudio Trombin).

There are two refuges inside the park.
The Crocetta refuge, which has two rooms with 38 and 14 seats, is equipped with sanitary facilities and an outdoor area furnished with picnic tables and wooden games for children. A prior request is necessary to use the facility.
The Termini refuge has a room with 16 beds, outside there is an equipped area with picnic tables and wooden games for children. A request is necessary to use the facility.
The route winds inside the Bosco delle Sorti della Partecipanza Natural Park in Trino, a protected natural area in Piedmont established in 1991.
Nearby there are 4 playgrounds, a fitness trail, and 6 equipped picnic areas (without drinking water and sanitary facilities). It is possible to rent the Cascinotti and the Cascina Gugliemina for recreational, educational, and scientific use, with barbecue points and beds.
Inside the forest some paths are marked with signs (distances, times, and orientation maps at entrances).
