The Grillenberg exhibition mine in Payerbach is a historically preserved iron ore mine and, along with the Seegrotte in Hinterbrühl, is one of two exhibition mines in Lower Austria.

The mine is accessed through the Herlinde tunnel. The path leads between the rails, past colorful stalactites, into the mountain. At the filling point, you encounter the thick iron-bearing layers. This is also where the tunnels branch off. One of them leads to a flooded sinkhole, through which the ore was once extracted from a depth of 120 m.

Why it's worth a visit:

Excitement and adventure for all ages: Guided tours for ages 4 and up make the visit an exciting experience. The guides accompany guests and share interesting facts about the history of iron ore mining in the upper Schwarzatal valley.

Discover wildlife in the tunnel: Rare cave animals such as cave crickets, fire salamanders, and several species of bats live in the exhibition mine, including the greater horseshoe bat, an endangered species.

Weather-independent excursion: Whether it's sunny, hot, or rainy, the tunnel maintains a constant temperature of 8°C throughout the year. With warm clothing and sturdy shoes, a visit is worthwhile in any weather.

Rock trail with a view: On the way to the mine, an educational trail leads along the historic ore trail. At the top of the slag heap, there is a magnificent view of the Schwarzatal valley and the Rax. Numerous information boards provide interesting facts about typical Austrian rock types.
