18 stations invite you between Steckborn and Ermatingen – both charming fishing villages on the southern shore of Lake Constance – into the world of fables. The eleven-kilometer themed hiking trail, specially suitable for children and families, can be leisurely walked in three hours and offers spectacular views of the Lake Constance region. Always included: Meister Petz, Meister Lampe, and many other feathered or furry mythical creatures, presented on 18 panels of the fable route with their stories. Complementing the tales of famous writers such as Aesop, Jean de La Fontaine, or Gotthold Ephraim Lessing are plenty of fitting quiz questions and suggestions for games. Small knowledge bites provide aha moments in the spirit of the old fable poets. Those who get hungry from the fable of the clever fox, the vain raven, and his piece of cheese can supply themselves at two grill sites located at the forest edge from their picnic backpack. Along the entire route, numerous benches invite to rest, reflect, and enjoy the view.
We start our hike at the train station in Steckborn. The landing stage, to which we can return by ship after the route, is only a few minutes’ walk away. From the train station, we follow the railway tracks first to Dorfstraße. We cross the tracks, turn left into Gehrenstraße and immediately right into Ofenbachstraße. Then continue on Schützenhausstraße until Mühlhofstraße branches off to the left. At the last houses of Steckborn, we turn right and then take the next path left between the fields.
The path now skirts a forest. We switch to the other side of the valley and follow the forest edge according to the signage of the mythical trail. Yellow directional signs with the green route label "Mythical Trail" complement the proven yellow signposts and mark the path.
Soon we pass the fireplace "Gääsinge" and shortly after the grill site "Burst". Both are directly located at the forest edge and invite us to a cozy picnic and to linger. We can also enjoy the view of the Untersee landscape and the town of Steckborn here. Shortly after, after the highest point of the hike at around 580 m above sea level, follows the shooting house above Salenstein. Here, a fantastic view opens over the Lake Constance region with the Reichenau monastery island and many small fishing villages.
If the march becomes too long, there is the option to follow the signposted hiking path via Adelmoos to Mannenbach-Salenstein and take the train from there. The mythical trail continues almost level, passing Fruthwilen. In a few wide switchbacks, we finally reach Ermatingen. Now we can return from the landing stage by ship or from the Ermatingen train station by train back to Steckborn.
