Along the Tarn, between riverbanks and orchards
Developed in the 1970s around the body of water created by the Rivières Dam, the recreation center is an ideal spot for water sports, fishing, walks along the water’s edge, or boat trips on the Tarn River.
The route...
The route first follows the river before offering a view of the Rivières hydroelectric dam, built in the late 1940s to support the expansion of electricity production.
Further on, the elegant silhouette of Lagrave Castle rises above the river. The road then winds through fields and orchards, notably near the Vergers du Bosquet, a reminder of the agricultural heritage of these particularly fertile alluvial lands.
As you continue on your way, the landscape gradually opens up: in the distance, the silhouette of the village of Sénouillac appears, nestled on its hillside. This succession of views of the river, the orchards, and the surrounding villages makes for a bucolic and very accessible stroll, ideal for combining gentle exercise with a moment of relaxation by the water.
1. From the Aiguelèze port parking lot, you’ll find the paved bike path in front of the sports fields; turn left, follow the Tarn River past the houses, take the Coutarde Haute, and turn left; after the RAGT building, continue straight ahead. (On the left is a short detour for a very easy 7-km loop; go straight ahead to the roundabout: point 5)
2. Be careful crossing the departmental road; follow the Route des Grèzes with views of Senouillac and the Gaillac hillsides. Cross over the railroad tracks; at the stop sign, turn left. Pass through the hamlet of La Maurélié; at the intersection, go straight ahead, then turn right, then left onto Route de Galdou. At the next intersection, turn right onto Route des Deux Rives. Enter the hamlet of Les Chouquet de Senouillac.
3. At the stop sign, turn left onto the road with a marked central lane until you reach the railroad tracks; cross them, turn left, go through the housing development, and continue left, crossing the railroad tracks again. Pass by the Verger des Bosquets.
4. Turn right, then left toward the RN 88. Be careful when crossing the departmental road ahead. Take a right turn, then a left turn, and pass through the narrow sections; the church of Rivière will be in front of you.
5. At the roundabout, turn right; after the curve under the plane trees, you’ll follow the Tarn River; at the Y-intersection, turn left. Admire the river dam and its hydroelectric power plant. Take the road across from you, follow the path along the Tarn (closed to traffic), pass through the barriers, and walk along the river with a view of Lagrave Castle.
6. After the concrete bollards, continue straight, then turn left at the end of the road and then right onto Chemin de Malepère to stay on the road; continue straight ahead into the dead-end street, Impasse du Chemin Saint Gris. Turn left, and you’ll arrive at the harbor parking lot; take Allée du Beaupré just above the harbor and continue on to return to the starting point.
>>>> RECOMMENDATIONS
A short bike loop on secondary roads with no significant elevation changes; be careful when crossing the two departmental roads.
