This short, very family-friendly section of the Traisental cycle route around St. Aegyd is quite unusual. It lies in the middle of the mountains, but is still relatively flat. You will find plenty of nature here (the district is the most densely wooded in Austria) and yet there are good refreshment stops and playgrounds.
Above all, however, you will encounter many animals on your bikes - native animals such as horses, dogs and cats at the Maho equestrian farm, but also very exotic ones at the Camel Theater and White Zoo in Kernhof: in addition to camels performing a play, you can marvel at white tigers, snow leopards and albino kangaroos.
Further details about the route can be found in the clear information sheet for the tour: Download here!

The bike route starts at the former train stop St. Aegyd/Markt. Up to this station, the tracks are still in place, although passenger service was discontinued a few years ago. The line from St. Aegyd/Markt to Kernhof has been out of service for a longer time. Here, before 2007, the tracks were replaced by a paved, wonderfully beautiful bike path to Kernhof, which then continues via Gscheid and the Walstern to Mariazell.
Immediately after the first short section, a large bridge crosses over the federal road. This was built for cyclists in summer and for cross-country skiers in winter.
A little further on, the MAHO riding farm is just a "stone's throw" from the bike path. Here, during a stop at the MAHO parlor, there is much to discover for both young and old.
After this short refreshment, the route continues always off the road to the old Kernhof station, which now houses a shoemaker's workshop.
Now it's only a few hundred meters to the camel theater in Kernhof, where fun and excitement are guaranteed!
The return trip is very easy "on foot" – the wheels almost roll downhill by themselves. Great fun.
Don’t forget your bike helmet!
