The most interesting sites of Gmünd’s past can be comfortably explored on a charming round walk. At the Upper City Gate, we discover the pillory dating from the 15th century. At the start of the covered castle ascent, we encounter the Old Women's Chapel. The climb to the Old Castle is worthwhile for its magnificent tower view. On the way to the simple-elegant Kalvarienberg Church, the 7 artistically designed (Protestant) Stations of the Cross deserve attention, as does the crypt of the Counts of Lodron behind the castle. The finale is formed by the rear medieval alleys with some cultural-historical treasures before you reflect back from present to medieval times over a coffee or ice cream at one of the lovely inns or cafes.
Start at the main square by the town hall - continue to the Upper City Gate - then left - past the Old Women's Chapel to the Old Castle - straight ahead - along the right path past the Stations of the Cross to the Kalvarienberg Church - straight through the forest to the "Bauchwehbründl" spring - at the end of the forest path, keep left through the Schloßbichl settlement to state road L 12 - cross the zebra crossing to the bike path - follow the bike path left along the Malta river to the Porsche Automobile Museum - continue to L 12 - cross the zebra crossing to the City Parish Church - continue through Kirchgasse to the main square back to the town hall.
