Hiking at the Mölltaler Glacier: Hochwurtenspeicher high altitude hike

We start at the middle station of the Mölltaler Glacier Cable Cars, keep left after exiting, and head towards the Weißseehaus (path no. 13). The first ascent leads along the paved access road to the Weißseehaus. Upon reaching the Weißsee, we follow the marking path no. 10 – a short stretch without a major incline runs along the Weißsee. Soon we reach the Hochwurtenspeicher and follow the path until we reach the end of the reservoir lake. During this gentle ascent, we enjoy the unique natural landscape. The last ascent is ahead until we finally reach the Panorama Restaurant Eissee. Here there is the option to either use the cable car for the descent or walk back to the middle station. 

There are two worthwhile places to stop: the Panorama Restaurant Eissee at the mountain station or the Goldgräberhütte at the middle station.

Good, sturdy footwear or hiking boots with profiled soles and possibly hiking poles. Warm clothing (alpine terrain, altitude 2,800-2,300 m), food and drink, backpack.

Even in summer, the altitude at the mountain means cool temperatures – be sure to take warm clothing.

Motorway A10 – coming from Villach/Italy
Via Spittal/Millstättersee junction to Lendorf exit, over B100 to the exit towards Möll Valley, over B106 to Flattach/Kleindorf. At the ADEG supermarket, turn right and drive about 8 km via L20a to Innerfragant to the valley station of the Mölltaler Glacier Cable Cars.

Federal road B106 – coming from Lienz
Via B107 to Winklern, turn right onto B106 there, continue via B106 to Flattach/Kleindorf. At the ADEG supermarket, turn left and drive about 8 km via L20a to Innerfragant to the valley station of the Mölltaler Glacier Cable Cars.

In the summer months, a hiking bus (line no. 5114) runs daily directly to the valley station of the Mölltaler Glacier Cable Car and back. Arrival by train to Mallnitz-Obervellach station. From there, continue with bus line no. 5114 to the stop at the valley station of the Mölltaler Glacier Cable Car. There are sufficient free parking spaces available at the valley station of the Mölltaler Glacier Cable Cars.
