There is plenty to see on this leisurely route. Two self-service locks provide exercise and even more variety.
The Villmar-Aumenau entry and exit point is located on the right bank of the Lahn. You leave the town under a bridge. After two wide right turns and equally wide left turns, you reach the village of Arfurt on the right bank after 5 kilometers. Behind Arfurt, also on the right side of the river, a beautiful rest area awaits you at the Arfurt campsite. On the right side of the Lahn, the Lahn Marble Museum and the train station greet you; the Villmar boat slipway entry and exit point is located behind the Marble Bridge from 1895 on the left bank of the Lahn.
To bypass the Villmar weir, you must turn into the lock canal on the right side of the Lahn. Passing the Bodensteiner Lei with the statue of King Konrad on the left bank and below the protected area "Wehrley von Runkel" on the right side of the Lahn, you can leisurely drift towards Runkel.
Two castles frame the picturesque town. On the left bank of the Lahn, you see the romantic Runkel Castle and on the right, Schadeck Castle towers high above the Lahn. The Runkel boat slipway entry and exit point is on the right side, just before the old Lahn bridge.
Then you bypass the Runkel weir via the self-service lock. Still in the lock canal, you paddle under the old Lahn bridge. Between Runkel Castle (left) and Schadeck Castle (right), you paddle downstream on the Lahn and reach the Runkel campsite entry and exit point on the left bank after just under one kilometer.

Paddling is fun in any weather. Protect yourself in cool and damp conditions with a water- and windproof jacket with hood.
In sunshine, the intensity is often underestimated because it feels pleasantly cool on the water. Protect yourself with a head covering against strong sunlight. Shoes don’t have to be pretty but must fit firmly. Best are lace-up, sports, or special paddling shoes.
For storing spare clothes and valuables, waterproof barrels or dry bags are recommended. If you book your trip through a canoe tour operator, they will provide them. Store your electronic devices only in waterproof containers!
The Lahn must not be navigated when reaching the HWS (Highest Navigable Water Level)! The HWS is a precursor to flooding. You can find the current Lahn water levels here. A brief explanation of the gauge displays is provided here.
With the QMW canoe seal (Quality Management Watersports), you recognize certified providers of canoe tours and canoe rentals. This award is given to companies engaged in preserving nature and water landscapes and offering guests safe and professional quality. These companies work with trained staff, have environmentally friendly operations, and continuously optimize safety and practical signage for their guests. These providers always provide life jackets free of charge because safety should cost nothing!
Always wear life jackets when you are on the water, and especially ensure that no child is sitting in the canoe without a life jacket.
If you are traveling with a canoe tour operator, let yourself be thoroughly instructed in canoeing. Have them provide you with a river description that you can take with you on your trip. The description should give information on all entry and exit points, rest and overnight spots, as well as special natural areas marked on a map. Additionally, you should be briefed on the particular nature of the respective river. If you are on your own, obtain map material containing these necessary details. The latest regulations for protected areas can be found here in the "Current Information" section.
