Canoe tour Lahn from Weimar-Roth to Gießen-Wißmar Bridge

The entry and exit point for water hikers is located south of Marburg in the Weimar district of Roth. You will find it on the left riverbank at the road bridge. On the first kilometers to Bellnhausen, you paddle mostly straight ahead. Just the right thing for getting used to it. Passing the nature reserve "Old Arm Bellnhausen", which is not allowed to be navigated, you reach Bellnhausen. You need to be a little careful at the Bellnhausen-Fronhausen road bridge. Here you should keep right at low water, because the current pulls into the bushes.

Passing Sichertshausen and Friedelhausen on the left bank of the Lahn as well as Röderheide and Salzbödetal on the right river side, you will reach Lollar-Odenhausen after a total of 7.7 km. The entry and exit point is located on the right bank of the Lahn behind the road bridge and offers the opportunity to exit.

Note: In autumn and winter - from September 21 to April 30 each year - the starting point of this canoe tour shifts to Lollar Odenhausen. This shift serves the special protection of rare bird species, which fortunately still live here. Between Weimar-Roth and Lollar-Odenhausen, the Lahn flows through the European bird sanctuary „Lahntal between Marburg and Gießen“.

To preserve its beauty, the floodplain areas of the Lahn are largely protected as particularly valuable natural areas. Through considerate behavior, all canoeists can help to preserve this nature and keep it accessible for everyone.

From Lollar-Odenhausen you paddle past the "Lahnblick" campsite, which is 1.5 kilometers behind Odenhausen on the right bank of the Lahn. You will reach the Buderus weir Lollar in just under a kilometer. Keep to the right bank here. But be careful, the boat passage has a rather tight curve and concrete walls. As an inexperienced paddler, you should better haul your boat. Then you steer around Lollar in a wide curve. Some small rapids demand your attention before you reach the entry and exit point Wettenberg-Wißmar on the right bank of the Lahn. From here you paddle further downstream. Soon a rapid about 100 m long will require your attention. Passing the Badenburg, you reach the entry and exit point Gießen-Wißmar Bridge on the left side of the Lahn behind the motorway bridge.

Paddling is fun in any weather. Protect yourself in cool and damp weather with a water- and windproof jacket with hood.

In sunshine, the intensity of the sun is often underestimated because it seems pleasantly cool on the water. Protect yourself with a head covering against strong sunlight. Shoes do not have to be pretty but must fit firmly. The best are lace-up, sports, or special paddling shoes.

For storing spare clothing and valuables, waterproof barrels or dry bags are recommended. If you book your tour through a canoe tour operator, they will provide them for you. Store your electronic devices only in waterproof containers!

The Lahn must not be navigated upon reaching the HWS (Highest Navigation Water Level)! The HWS is a preliminary stage to flood. You can find the current Lahn water levels here. A brief explanation of the water level displays has been compiled here.

Always wear life jackets when you are on the water, and especially ensure that no child sits in the canoe without a life jacket.

If you are traveling with a canoe tour operator, let yourself be thoroughly instructed in canoeing. Ask for a river description that you can take with you on your river trip. The river description should provide information on all entry and exit points, rest and overnight stops, as well as special natural areas marked on a map. Furthermore, you should be instructed on the particularities of the nature of the respective river. If you are on your own, get map material containing this essential information. The Weimar-Roth entry and exit point on the left riverbank at the road bridge is accessible by car.

Weimar-Roth is accessible by bus lines 31 and 32. From the Wolfshäuser Straße stop, the entry and exit point, which is 300 m away, can be reached on foot.

The Friedelhausen station is 230 m from the Lollar-Odenhausen entry and exit point. Among others, the RB 41 stops here.

In the RMV area, i.e., in the Hessian Lahntal, the canoe ticket is recommended!

Parking lot at the Weimar-Roth entry and exit point available.

Basically, travel by bus or train is recommended.
