Set off to discover the marshes, the Canal du Nord, and the Somme Canal for a walk through culture, woods, marshes, and the towpath.
The route starts from the parking lot of the town hall/school of Pargny, then heads up towards the Canal du Nord to reach Falvy. This is a key site of the Battle of the Somme. The Anglo-Saxon military cemetery, one of the largest in the department, has 265 graves of English, Scottish, Irish, Australian, and New Zealand soldiers.
Originally Romanesque, the Sainte-Benoîte Church of Falvy, classified as a historical monument, was delicately reshaped in the Gothic style in the 15th century by Marie de Luxembourg. She had a magnificent chapel built inside, considered a masterpiece of Gothic art. The itinerary follows the marshes, passes through the Etang Brûlé and Grand Jardinet woods, and crosses the plains to reach Villecourt and then Béthencourt-sur-Somme. Located next to the current town hall, the Saint-Barthélemy spring dates back to the 18th century. It was believed to have the power to cure eye diseases. Residents came to collect water from it until 1960. The church is dedicated to Saint-Barthélemy. You can admire a statue representing him.
In Béthencourt-sur-Somme, the towpath leads back to Pargny.
