The entire route length is 110 km, but it is also possible to canoe it in parts. The recommended starting point is Lake Savonkaita, with the finish inside the Ruokolahti center. The route can also be paddled shorter, finishing for example at Mustaniemi, from where transportation must be arranged. Carry points for canoes are at Kemppilä mill rapids and Lieviskä.
This river and lake canoeing route includes glacial potholes, rock paintings and three Suvorov-era canals: Kukonharju, Käyhkä, and Kutvele canals. Shortly after the Kutvele canal, paddlers arrive at the beautiful shores of Huuhanranta. The route also allows detours to explore the Katosselkä nature reserve. Saimaa ringed seals can occasionally be seen between the Mustaniemi lean-to, Huuhanranta, and Katosselkä.

The starting point of the Ruokolahti canoeing route is at Lake Savonkaita along Sulkavantie (438). From Virmutjoki in Ruokolahti, drive about 15 km, and the road to the shore turns right immediately after the regional border.
