Longinus Cycle Route Stage 1

Cycle through the Leitha and Danube floodplains in the footsteps of the Roman legionaries. The theme cycling route "Longinus" leads you on the tracks of the Roman legionary Marcus Vinius Longinus. The areas along the cycle path were once inhabited by various tribes and peoples, including the Romans. Longinus was a Roman veteran whose gravestone was discovered during excavations in Leithaprodersdorf and can be seen at Gschlössl, the starting point of this cycle route. Marcus Vinius Longinus was stationed at a legion camp in Brigetio, near the endpoint of the cycle route in Iza in Slovakia. From this camp, he and his wife traveled to Pannonia - Leithaprodersdorf - where he lived until his death.

Information about the early Roman imperial period can be found on 17 display panels set up at rest stops along the cycling route. Another 10 panels document remarkable archaeological sites, important churches, and significant cultural-historical events.

The Roman town of Carnuntum, Deben castle, or the archaeological museum in Bratislava let you experience the Roman era up close.

This cycle route is unique not only because of its history but also because of its unmistakable landscape.
