The volcano route at the striking landmark of the city of Singen, the Hohentwiel, can be completed independently or with the help of an audio tour. Expect magnificent views and an impressive fortress ruin inviting you to visit. But the Hohentwiel has much more to offer: The massive volcanic rock tells of past fire and glacier activities. People have also left their marks here for about 7,000 years - even in the animal and plant world of the mountain. Hohentwiel reflects the interplay between geological forces, humans, and nature, shown in a diverse mosaic of habitats.
The mountain, protected since 1941, is a true paradise due to its scenic beauty and rich variety of rare plants and animals. The volcano path informs about the protection of nature and landscape as well as the ecological importance of its current slopes. Many endangered animal species and rare plants live here, many of which are on the Red List due to their threat. Therefore, this place must be specially protected.
If you are interested in being guided by geologist Matthias Geyer, nature conservator Heinrich Werner, or former operator Hubertus Both through this fascinating world of flora and fauna, you can download the audio guide for free via the Lauschtour app (Android, iOS).

The start is at the Hohentwiel information center near the Domäne. From there, follow a gravel path to the right past the sheep barn. There you will find the first information board, which addresses the effects on the mountain caused by the natural forces of fire and ice. The path then gently ascends to board number 2. It explains how the bush encroachment of the mountain is prevented with the help of the sheep. On the way to board number 3, there is a wide view down to the community of Hilzingen and over to the Swiss border. Boards 3, 4, and 5 deal with the herbs that have spread since the Middle Ages on the heights of the castle from the castle garden. Furthermore, the shrike, grasshoppers like "the beautiful Italian," and the steppe grasshoppers are native here. At certain spots, so-called lapilli, marble-sized magma pieces, come to light. From the viewpoint with the "sky lounger," the path leads across a meadow area and later steps towards the Vollmayer winery and through the southern slope of the mountain via the vineyards of the state winery Meersburg down to the foot of the mountain. The individual information boards up to board number 8 report on the changes in the landscape, the plants and animals living there, and the highest vineyard in Germany. The path continues ascending via the Widerholdweg back to the starting point at the Domäne.
By the way, between boards 2 and 3, a detour to visit the fortress ruins can be done quite well. Especially with children, the ruin is definitely worth a visit. Please buy entrance tickets at the information center at the Domäne before starting the hike.
