The alternative cultural center on Lake Zurich, which has already hosted bands like Nirvana and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, has a rich history and much more ahead of it.

The alternative counterpart to the classical institutions in the city center is the "Rote Fabrik," beautifully located on Lake Zurich.

This renowned cultural center brings together concerts, art interventions, film screenings, and theater performances that focus on social and cultural-political themes under one roof.

The "Rote Fabrik" complex also houses the "Shedhalle," an institution for contemporary and critical art, as well as the restaurant Ziegel oh Lac.

The "Rote Fabrik" served as a silk weaving factory until 1940. After its closure, many rooms remained empty or were used for storage. In the 1970s and 1980s, the Zurich youth movement advocated for its own independent cultural center and saw the factory grounds as an ideal location.

Initially, the youth movement was not taken seriously. It was only after numerous demonstrations and some violent clashes that the factory area was temporarily leased to the "Interessengemeinschaft Rote Fabrik" (which still exists today). Soon after, bands like Nirvana, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bad Religion, and Manu Chao performed legendary concerts here before gaining fame in Europe. Authors such as Günter Grass and Alice Schwarzer gave readings in the club room, while the factory theater hosted performances and discussion evenings with an enthusiastic young audience.

In 1987, what started as a temporary arrangement became a permanent operation. The concept of the "Rote Fabrik" continues to thrive to this day.
