The rediscovered past: among ancient farmsteads and restored barns

From the tourist office in Canazei's central square, walk down Strèda Roma, passing the playground. At the crossroads, continue straight along Strèda del Ciuch, which follows the meadows of Gries. Leaving the village behind, the narrow lane enters the woods for about 400 metres. Continue along the bank of the Avisio river until you reach the first houses of Campitello. Follow Strèda Veia to the square, then take Strèda dò Ruf. At the junction with Strèda de Salin and Strèda Sènc Felip e Giacum, climb the steps on the right-hand side of the road, where the chairlift to Col Rodella once departed. Continue straight ahead and, in front of the wayside Marian shrine, turn right.
Here a steep path begins, lined with the chapels of the Stations of the Cross (built in 1760 and restored in 1978), each accompanied by thought-provoking sayings in Ladin. Among the most unusual are: "It is more valuable to take off your hat before the Passion of Christ than to whitewash the shrine" and "O Heart of Jesus, protect all those who go up and down". Once you reach Pian, visit the small village with its little church dedicated to St. Mary the Virgin, one of the oldest - and still inhabited - settlements in the Fassa Valley, where you can also see some ancient bread ovens, located outside the perimeter walls of the houses. Then descend to the right along Strèda de Pian. At the hairpin bend, leave the municipal road and take the "So Ronch" forest road on the left. Follow the easy path to the car park of Park Hotel Il Caminetto. Reach the hotel entrance and cross the main road. Immediately after the wooden sign, take the dirt track that descends to the right and leads into Strèda Franz Dantone. At the junction with Strèda del Ciuch, return to the centre along the same route as on the way out.

2. Inform someone about your planned itinerary, return time and possible changes.

3. Plan your outings with others and, when possible, rely on a mountain professional.

4. Bring avalanche rescue equipment (beacon, shovel and probe) with you, practise using it regularly and do a group test before setting off.

5. Make sure you have suitable clothing and equipment (poles, crampons, water, snacks, etc.). 

6. Always keep your pet on a leash.

7. Constantly and carefully assess the conditions of the route and your mental, physical and technical abilities. If in doubt, turn back.

8. Do not cross ski slopes, either downhill or cross-country.

9. Respect the environment around you and take your rubbish back down to the valley.

10. Help those in need. In case of real need and for emergencies, call 112.
