Bike tour - 19 - "Cycling round between Rennsteig and Bad Lobenstein" - Thuringia

The circular cycling tour from Wurzbach leads through the nature park Thuringian Slate Mountains / Upper Saale, which belongs to the Thuringian Forest. The route of around 40 kilometers connects the elevations of the Rennsteig with the valley landscapes around Ebersdorf and Bad Lobenstein. The start and end point is Wurzbach, close to the Rennsteig. The route first leads to the Heinrichshütte foundry, a technical show monument about the history of iron casting, then continues via Thierbach and Eliasbrunn towards Friesau. There you pass the historic fortified church before descending to Ebersdorf. The Ebersdorf Park with castle and orangery is a good place to take a break. The route then continues to Bad Lobenstein, where sights such as the Mountain Museum Markt-Höhler, the regional museum, or the Ardesia thermal baths can be visited. Afterwards follows a longer climb towards Rennsteig. At Schlegel, you meet the Rennsteig cycle path and follow it to Rodacherbrunn. From there, a longer descent leads back to Wurzbach, where the circular course closes.

The route runs mostly on well-maintained paths but includes several climbs and is classified as moderately difficult. It is aimed at experienced recreational cyclists as well as e-bike users. Note: The section Wurzbach – Klettingshammer (approx. 3 km) runs along the B90. Currently, there are no alternatives for a bike-traffic-appropriate detour.
