Bike route - "Bike route around the Uhlstädter Heath" - Thuringia

The bike route begins at the striking Carl-Zeiss-Bridge in Saalfeld – a modern foot and cycle bridge over the Saale, which serves as an ideal starting point. From there it goes close to the river on the Saale cycle path towards Rudolstadt. The route offers wide views of the floodplain landscape, wooded hills, and the calm Saale.

It continues through the industrially shaped Schwarza into the Baroque town of Rudolstadt. In the urban area, commercial areas, green spaces, and small parks alternate. Those with time can ride up to Heidecksburg and enjoy the view.

Along the Saale valley, the route passes through smaller districts of Uhlstädt-Kirchhasel. The landscape is gentle and rural, with fields, meadows, and small woodland areas. The village church in Kirchhasel with its Romanesque-Gothic tower invites you to take a break. Village idyll and beautiful river landscapes shape the way in Orlamünde and Freienorla.

In Pößneck, you can visit the wonderful historic old town and refresh yourself for the onward journey. It continues via Krölpa and Weira to Unterwellenborn, where a detour to the Kulm lookout tower is worthwhile in good weather. The view over the Saale and Schwarza valleys is impressive.

The tour ends again at the Carl-Zeiss-Bridge in Saalfeld. The route is mostly flat to slightly hilly and offers a varied combination of nature experience, cultural stops, and regional dining options – perfect for a sporty day trip.
