After a final farewell in Nimi, the route returns to the main ridge to cross the first massive mountain of our journey, the rocky Madom da Sgiof. A narrow ridge and short scrambling passages put us to the test, but some handholds help to master the most difficult spots elegantly.
The Passo Deva, a wide saddle between Maggia and Brione, is perfect for a longer rest. The stage is short, there is no rush. On the right, beyond the Verzasca, rises the incredible shark fin of Poncione d'Alnasca; on the left, the view disappears in the many folds of the Valle del Salto. Last but not least, the Alpe Masnee awaits us, an eagle's nest made from once dilapidated barns. The successful repurposing of this former alpine pasture shows by example how well preservation and renewal, sustainable eco-tourism, and monument protection can be combined.

The Via Alta Vallemaggia partly follows mountain hiking trails (T3), partly alpine paths (T4-T5–). Here and there, short sections with risk of falling and easy climbing passages must be overcome. The most delicate spots are often made safer with chains and handholds.
Some huts open as early as June, when the connecting stages are often still snow-covered. The best season usually lasts from July to September/October. But even in high summer, it is advisable to contact the hut wardens and ask about current conditions. Reservations in the huts are absolutely necessary to avoid unpleasant surprises and to secure a sleeping place.
The necessary prerequisites are:
Good experience in alpine terrain Adequate fitness Detailed planning (current conditions, weather, etc.) Surefootedness in pathless terrain and freedom from dizzinessNot to be underestimated:
Altitude Sudden weather changes Snowfields (especially early in the season) Stage length (especially for larger groups) Often patchy mobile network coverage No drinking water sources on some stagesEmergency number in Switzerland (REGA): 1414
International emergency number: 112
When calling 112, you will be connected directly to the responsible rescue unit (medical, police, fire brigade). The GSM emergency number 112 can also be dialed with a locked SIM card or locked device. The emergency number 112 is valid in almost all countries with GSM networks. Outside Switzerland, it also works without a SIM card.
In an emergency:
Keep a cool head Protect injured and affected persons from further dangers, weather, and cold Provide first aid Alert rescue forces and initiate the rescue. Do not leave injured persons alone Do not forget your own safetyT5
