As a result of the renaturation of an open-cast mining near the southern city limit of Görlitz a paradise for water lovers was created in the last decade. The almost 1,000-hectare, 72-metre-deep Berzdorf Lake is not only the fifth-largest lake in Saxony but also one of the most popular.
The 16km long path around the Berzdorf Lake is mostly asphalted and passes bathing facilities, playgrounds and a nature reserve (here you have to dismount and push the bike). Cyclists, skaters and walkers enjoy nature at the shore and near the lake to every time of the year. For water sports enthusiasts such as surfers, sailors and stand-up paddlers, Berzdorf Lake is ideal to live their passion. If you just want to go for a swim several swimming sites invite you to get into the crystal-clear and refreshing water.
Cycle in an southward direction along Deutsch-Ossig. Here are further culinary offerings such as "Carari" or the "Milchbar" with delicious ice cream.
On the way towards the harbour you will pass the hotel "Insel der Sinne". A stop at this hotel is recommended because it has a great lake terrace with restaurant.
Now cycle around the headland where a goat enclosure is located. It is worthwhile, to dismount and watch the goats in their large outdoor enclosure. The next stop is the harbour. Here it is possible to enjoy the view of the lake.
Cycle to Hagenwerder, where you can see and visit the huge bucket wheel excavator 1452.
The bicycle tour continues towards the hotel "Gut am See", which is located on the ground of the former manor of Tauchritz. The Tauchritz moated castle, which is very recommendable for a photo stop, is also located here.
Afterwards the tour continues along the lake to "Blaue Lagune". Here you can stop for a swim, to enjoy some beach volleyball or for various water activities. Furthermore it is possible to visit the lookout tower "Neuberzdorfer Höhe".
The tour continues along the shore of the lake back to the north-east beach. On the western shore you can find a section that is a nature reserve (landslide P). The bikes have to be pushed through this area.
Roadworthy bicycle, bicycle helmet, rucksack (approx. 20 litres) with rain cover, comfortable sport shoes, weatherproof and hard-wearing clothing in multiple layers, bicycle tyre, cycle tools, sun and rain protection, provisions and drinking water, first aid kit, pocketknife, mobile phone, if necessary headlamp and reflectors, map material
There are sections which are not asphalted. It is not allowed to cycle through the nature reserve (western shore), you have to push the bike in this area.
Cycle along the Oder-Neisse cycle path in a southward direction to Berzdorf Lake.

Take B99 from Görlitz in the direction of Zittau.

Note: If you take the train, starting point and end is the Hagenwerder station.
Parking with costs is possible directly at Berzdorf Lake.
