Green-Belt-Thuringia

This biotope network is not only Germany's largest and most important habitat network but also extends as the "European Green Belt" through a total of 24 European countries. Paradoxically, it was precisely the hostile border route that created habitats that have otherwise become very rare.

The Free State of Thuringia designated the "Green Belt Thuringia" as a National Natural Monument in December 2018. Over a length of 763 km – Thuringia has by far the largest share of the Green Belt in Germany – a contiguous section of the Green Belt in Germany was uniformly protected for the first time. Much has already been achieved through the designation for protection – and yet continuous commitment is necessary for the Green Belt to have a future.
