Moselsteig stage 05: Trier – Schweich

You start this route at Trier Central Station. From here, the stage initially leads over the access path to the Moselsteig. Not far from the station, you immediately pass the most famous Trier landmark: the Porta Nigra. Continuing through Nordallee and over the Kaiser Wilhelm Bridge towards Weisshauswald, where the access path meets the main trail. The first part of the day's stage runs the Eifelsteig on the same route as the Moselsteig. Just behind the Weisshaus inn begins the rock path, which always follows close to the edge of the steep Buntsandstein cliffs. Here you will repeatedly discover viewpoints with dreamlike views over the city and the Moselle valley. After the path crosses the ridge, it soon descends quite steeply down the slope to Biewer.

The small district is only touched on the edge. At a staircase, the Moselsteig leaves Biewerer Street and, together with the Eifelsteig, climbs a steep staircase that later turns into a no less steep path with rock steps made of Buntsandstein. At the end of the path, you are not quite done yet, as the route continues uphill – this time on a wider path to a small chapel where you can take a short break. The ascent continues in the forest and only ends at the forest edge. The path leads through meadows and pastures and comes very close to the district Auf der Bausch. Here, at the forest edge, stands an old, widely spreading oak tree, under which you find a nice resting place. At this point, Moselsteig and Eifelsteig separate.

On a well-developed forest road, the path descends evenly into the Wallenbach valley. You cross the B 52 via an underpass, and the Moselsteig leads uphill into the forest on the other side of the valley. Through the varied forest, you soon reach the Ehranger Kanzel. From this prominent viewpoint, where there is also a shelter at the top, you are rewarded with a wonderful view of the northern part of the Trier Moselle valley! In the distance, the stage destination Schweich can already be made out, with the large vineyards behind it. From the Ehranger Kanzel, the path first leads steeply downhill. In switchbacks, the path passes mighty towers of Buntsandstein rocks down into the valley. The Moselsteig crosses the railway and the Kyll river, and thus you find yourself in the middle of the Ehrang district center.

Along Kyllstraße, you pass through a traffic-calmed area to the church. The next ascent awaits – short but very steep. Accompanied by Stations of the Cross and many stairs, you climb up to the Heide Chapel, the end point of the Stations of the Cross. Shortly behind the chapel, on the red Buntsandstein rocks, there is a charming viewpoint. From the benches at the Peace Cross, you have a wonderful view of the very wide Moselle valley here and various Trier districts, such as Kenn and Ehrang. The view also extends into the Ruwer valley and further up into the Hunsrück. To the east, the view is clear to the stage destination Schweich.

The path follows the nearby edge for a while longer, past some individually standing houses, and finally leads to the edge of the Auf der Heide settlement. At a hairpin bend, it goes steeply downhill to the right into the forest. This path reaches another forest path that runs almost level along the forest edge with views into the Moselle valley. Above the cemetery of Quint, the Moselsteig leaves the forest. Downhill, past the cemetery, you reach the Quint stop, where the Moselsteig crosses railway and road. Through the new development area and along the railway, you come to the crossing of the road to Schweich. On the opposite side of the road, the Moselsteig leads on a path into the forest. Where the path meets the forest road, an access path leads to the forester's house in Quint: here begins a modern forest educational trail with many discoveries! However, the Moselsteig continues through the forest, past a hiking car park and the buildings of the Haardthof settlement. Finally, you leave the forest. Through a section shaped by fields and meadows full of fruit trees, the route leads to the outskirts of Schweich. After the railway underpass, you reach the station either via the access path or through the large new development area into the town center of Schweich. The stage ends near the Stefan Andres Fountain.

You can reach the stage locations Trier (Central Station) and Schweich (station) by train (RB 81, 83, RE 11). Additionally, you can also reach Trier (Central Station) and Schweich (school center) by bus line 220.
There are regular connections. Please note that during school holidays in Rhineland-Palatinate / Saarland, at weekends and on public holidays, there may be limitations on the frequency! Please check the current daily timetable on the website of the Trier Regional Transport Association (VRT):

Trier: At the central station or in the city center, no free parking is available, but near Trier University, you can use the Weisshauswald hiking car park (directly on the Moselsteig).

Schweich: Parking is available near the Stefan Andres Fountain and Bernhard Becker Street. The Schweich station also offers good parking options.
