The trail connects the former Vezzani Experimental Station to Monte Genevris, passing through Alpe Laune, Lake Laune, and Costa Piana Pass. It is a pleasant and fairly easy hike for those who stop at the alpine lake, a little more challenging for those who decide to reach the Alpini Lighthouse, from which you can enjoy a magnificent view of the Upper Susa and Chisone Valleys and France.
The route starts from the former Vezzani Experimental Station, a now inactive complex built in the 1930s for experimenting with high-altitude crops, as well as for cattle breeding and milk processing. It continues on dirt road through woods and views over Sauze d’Oulx. Lake Laune, surrounded by meadows and larches, invites you to rest. Climbing through woods and clearings, you reach Costa Piana Pass. After crossing the Assietta Road, the last ridge section leads to Monte Genevris, amid alpine meadows and breathtaking views.
Support and technical description by Barbara Demonte - Environmental hiking guide.
The trail starts at an altitude of 1,850 m near the former Vezzani Alpine Experimental Station, where the paved road coming from the Richardette hamlet to Monte di Sauze d’Oulx ends, and where the dirt road of the Assietta begins. Park at the entrance of this road on its edge, but space is limited; in July and August, it is possible to alternatively use the local shuttle. Start the route by crossing the Vezzani complex and following the dirt road, which in some parts is quite steep, leading to Lake Laune and the homonymous alpine pasture (about 2,050 m); turn right until you reach the lake at about 2,080 m. Continue along the right side of the lake, and at the summit take the trail steeply uphill straight ahead towards the Alpini Lighthouse and Costa Piana Pass. At about 2,190 m you reach a grassy plain: be careful not to go straight on the flat, but turn left on the trail indicated only with number 6, under the Region Piemonte label. At about 2,240 m the trail turns right at a small livestock watering trough and then emerges on another plain at about 2,280 m, where signs indicate Costa Piana Pass; the trail descends slightly then immediately rises again by taking the piste that passes in front of a disused ski lift and, after some hairpin bends, leads to Costa Piana Pass at about 2,320 m; here the Assietta Road passes, which is ignored, and going left along the ridge trail passing near a bunker at about 2,360 m, you reach Monte Genevris or Alpini Lighthouse at about 2,535 m.
