From the Thur Valley to Lake Walen - wouldn't that be an enticing view on a beautiful winter morning? You start in the Toggenburg village of Stein SG. On the shady side, you ascend past Dörfli to Eggli. Then you hike the ski touring route through Dürrenbachwald and over pastures up to Vorder Höhi. Almost 700 meters of elevation gain are overcome, then it is almost exclusively gently downhill (327 meters). Use the snow hiking trail and enjoy the view over to Leistchamm and down to Lake Walen. Past Altschen you come to Arvenbüel. The post bus will take you down to Amden, Weesen and Ziegelbrücke, where you transfer to the train (to Nesslau) and then again to the bus.
Stein (SG) - Dörfli - Eggli - Dürrenbachwald - Vorder Höhi - Altschen - Arvenbüel
Snowshoes, telescopic poles with large baskets, avalanche equipment with transceiver, avalanche probe and shovel, day hiking backpack (approx. 30 liters) with rain cover, possibly with avalanche airbag, comfortable and waterproof winter shoes or sturdy hiking boots suitable for binding with snowshoes, possibly gaiters, warm and durable clothing in layers, ski jacket and pants, hat/headband, scarf, gloves, possibly ski goggles, sun and rain protection, provisions and drinking water, thermos with hot drink, first aid kit, pocket knife, mobile phone, possibly headlamp and reflectors, map material, possibly bivouac sack and emergency blanket
Do not leave the route, as there are adjacent wildlife conservation zones that must not be entered.
From the Greater Zurich Area and Central Switzerland:
On the A3 at Reichenburg towards Rapperswil and then over the Ricken Pass to Wattwil. Afterwards, head up the Toggenburg to Stein SG.
From Eastern Switzerland:
From St. Gallen to Herisau and further over Wasserfluh to Lichtensteig. Or from St. Gallen to Wil, take the Toggenburg exit. Follow the main road to Stein SG.
From Southern Germany:
Via Bregenz and St. Margrethen on the A13 to Haag and take the exit towards Toggenburg/Wildhaus. Or via Konstanz to Wil, then take the Toggenburg exit and follow the main road to Stein SG.
By train to Nesslau-Neu St. Johann or Buchs SG, then by post bus to the stop "Stein Dorf".
Some parking spaces are available slightly above the village of Stein towards Laad.
