DUNES, an exceptionally mobile environment
The dunes of the Orpellières are in an exceptional state of preservation at the scale of Hérault.
This is mainly due to sediment drift, coming from the east, which is stopped in its trajectory by the breakwater at the mouth of the Orb. Moreover, the installation of sand fences since the 1980s promotes the preservation of this particular space. The dunes form from the beach based on natural sea wrack transported by waves during storms.
Driftwood brings organic matter that supports the development of plants such as sea spurge and sea holly. As they grow, plants diversify and become denser. Marram grass is the typical dune plant. You can also observe sea lilies and immortelles.
The dunes also host special fauna: reptiles like Edwards' sand racer, snails (the dune snail), and many species of solitary bees. The dune is a rich environment that needs mobility to be preserved.
1- Maison des Orpellières
From the parking lot, take the pedestrian path towards the Maison des Orpellières. Cross a road and, via a footbridge, continue straight ahead. Walk alongside the Maison des Orpellières, then head towards the Orb River by crossing open moorland. Follow the edge of the Orb for about 400 m, then reach a road. Pass a ford on the right, then turn right to reach the river again and walk another 400 m.
2- End of the path on the banks of the Orb
Turn left then cross a parking lot to reach a road. Take the road on the right and immediately turn left onto a track leading to the beach.
3- Access to the Tellines observatory
Continue straight ahead to access the Tellines observatory, then return back along the same path.
Turn right into the salt marshes (a flat natural area with low vegetation near the seashore, flooded by salt water only during high tides); carefully follow the zigzagging path for about 1.5 km, behind a dune.
4- Access to the beach and return to the start
At the beach access track, turn left, cross a small bridge, then walk towards the starting parking lot.
