More than 400 km of marked routes await you to discover the Creuse from east to west and north to south!
This Creuse route will allow you to discover the remarkable—and often little-known—natural and cultural heritage of a department rich in remarkable and surprising sites!
From the Creuse painters’ valley to Lake Vassivière, passing through Aubusson, the Landes pond Nature Reserve, the medieval towns of La Souterraine,
Bénévent l’Abbaye, Bourganeuf, or the abbey church of Chambon/Voueize and the spa town of Evaux les Bains, the countryside offers ever-changing landscapes revealed along the small roads.

From valley to valley, stop in the pretty Creuse villages, and like a pilgrim, discover the small chapels lining the route.
The bike route starts in the painters’ valley at Crozant, revealing a medieval fortress at the confluence of the Creuse and Sédelle; then passing through St Germain Beaupré it heads to La Souterraine, a medieval town where scallop shells mark your way towards Porte St Jean and the Notre Dame Church. The route then follows the Gartempe Valley and will lead you to Grand Bourg then to Bénévent-l’Abbaye, the only commune in Limousin to have received the “Petite Cité de Caractère©” label where you can admire the abbey church built in the 12th century.
On this 48 km stage, you will be on the West Creuse cycle route mainly on shared roads with cars but with little traffic (less than 500 vehicles per day). The profile of this stage is relatively uphill but without any major difficulty to report.
A well-maintained and well-equipped bike helps ensure your safety as well as that of other road users.
Before setting off:
Make sure the bike is in perfect mechanical condition, including tires and brakes Ensure the bike is properly adjusted to your body shape Wearing a helmet is strongly recommended Bring a repair kit Remember that the Highway Code applies to cyclists at all times Never ride more than two abreast and single up when traffic conditions require it Respect other users as you would like them to respect you Choose a route suited to your physical abilities Inform those around you of your itinerary Check weather conditions A first aid kit is not essential but can be very useful Know and keep emergency numbers on hand. Respect the environment by not throwing food wrappers onto the roadside If you must return at dusk, make sure you can see and be seenEmergency number: 112
